Had problem with extended shaft Honda 9.9: 2005. The "bearing" housing tunnel around the drive shaft becomes occluded in time, building up too much friction to turn. Another sailor had the same problem and dumped the engine. I had mine drilled out so there would be a clearance of about 0.2mm. Since then, not post 2yr...engine has worked perfectly. This is definitely a flaw in the design of the Honda 9.9 extended shaft marine engine.
