midd 90's Merc 25 going forward in reverse

I have a mid-90s Merc 25 with the F-N-R on the twist tiller handle. Today, out of the blue, shifting into reverse made the motor go forward. So forward is forward...reverse is forward. I do still have neutral. Some kind of linkage issue in the tiller or something messier?
