Tach wire route 1992 75hp

My motor is a 1992 75 hp. Mariner.
I have been having a problem with my tach working and then not while moving. Like possibly a loose wire type thing. All other gauges work. My question is the route of the grey wire. Does it go straight from motor to gauge or is there a stop somewhere. My manual doesn't seem to explain the route.
The search engine for this site I really don't figure out either.

The "route" is boat dependent, not motor dependent. Usually tach lead goes from motor to a connector and thence to a cable to.....eventually the gauge. First place to look is that conector.

Check and make sure your engine is charging cause the tach is supplied its signal from the voltage regulator on the engine.
