I need to replace the cover gasket as water is leaking around the spark plugs. I can't find the gasket on any Mercury parts sites and i have to say ,i am very bad at using a computer.
my motor is a 1972 mercury 50 hp

can somebody help me out ?

Caution! On my 1985 25 HP Mercury the cover assembly is attached to the cylinder block with six stainless steel metric threaded bolts (10mm bolt head.) I broke two bolts and then two bolt extractors, which are made from hardened steel. I spent lots of time trying to remove this mess and eventually damaged the original holes in the aluminum cylinder block. My fix was not pretty, but not too noticeable and it does not leak.

On the '72 motor the are imperial/AF,try an impact gun and when they do break, forget the extractors, just drill and cobalt bits are best and go to the home depot and get a couple of gallons of patience:D,been there with my beautiful merc800,1969 vintage.
When you do mess up a hole go to home depot again and get a couple of high tensile bolt and tap the hole
