1991 9.9 stalls when accelerating

I just recently bought a 1991 yamaha T9.9 ELRQ. I started it and it idles fine in and out of the water. When it is out of water and you put it in gear it will still run but as soon as you accelerate it will stall. When the motor is in the water you can't even put it in gear without it stalling. It also stalls when you accelerate in neutral. I took the carb off and cleaned it, yet I still have the problem. Any ideas of what's wrong?

Re: 9.9 stalls when accelerating

I was recently told by an outboard mechanic that there are two jets - one for idling, one for speed. It sounds like the high-speed jet could need cleaning. If fuel was allowed to sit for any length of time, it can gum up those jets. I think all it takes is something like a cutting torch file (small round ones used to clean the holes in a cutting torch head).

I'm no mechanic, but I did stay at a Howard Johnson's last night.

Good luck,

Bob

Do a compression check first.compression should be at least 100 PSI.
