1979 6hp Evinrude shift lever slipping

I've got a 1979 6hp Evinrude Model #6905E. While in forward and under load the lever will slip into neutral. Rather annoying. The motor has seen a lot of use, but seems to run well.

Could this be that the shift controls are worn out down in the gear case? It seams that the detent maybe just worn out if there is such a thing. I don't want to use a bungee cord to keep the lever in place.

Thanks for the response.

There is a detent system on the shift rod down in the gear case but the common case of them jumping out of gear is wear on the dog clutch. (caused by gentle gear engagement instead of a quick snap action)

Clutch dog, and frequently worn gear as well. Might be a good time to look for a deal on a used LU. Ebay and Craig's List are great sources.

On the other hand it may be possible to turn the clutch dog around and get a bit more use out of it. It depends on the dog being reversible and the forward gear itself not being too badly worn.
