Long leg vs other

I started with a free boat and outboard motor knowing there were problems to be sorted before hitting the water. The boat was fitted with a Mariner (by Yamaha) 2 stroke 2 cylinder 55hp, but this engine had a snapped upper shift rod (at the connector to lower rod). I have since bought another outboard that is almost identical but is a 60hp unit (with tilt/trim).

The problem I now have is that the recently purchased outboard is a long leg unit and the first one is without a doubt shorter. Can I convert the long unit back to short using the parts from the first one? Is this a really big job?

Get ahold of a part number list and make sure the mid section has the same part number.
If it does, it is an easy job for anyone with some mechanical skils.

Get a manual too. That makes it easy.

It appears that only the trunk, exhaust housing (inner for trunk), upper shift rod, drive shaft, and swivel bracket differ between the long and short shaft varieties. Since the upper shift rod on the original engine needs removing for replacement or fixing I don't seem to have gained much by getting the second one.
