40 hp merc regulator

Do you ever run the motor without a "marine" battery connected?

Without any battery (or one totally dead that won't take a charge) the regulator will fry almost immediately.

Running a "car battery" will kill the regulator a little more slowly. An outboard charge system relies on the battery acting as a capacitor in the system - a regular automotive battery can't do that.

A toasted regulator can cause voltage to "back up" and take out the stator as well (suspect that's what happend in 08).

Does any of the above apply in this case?
