I've been lookin for a outboard short shaft motor to turn my 1980 into a short shaft . serial number for the 35 hp short shaft is 2423469 boats.net shows it uses the same midsection by part number. I'll be buying the motor over the internet and want to make sure it's a short shaft and it will work . I don't like buying stuff i can't lay my hand on or eyes on before i buy . thanks for any help

However, from the serial number (which is just a production number) you can't get any information at all.

So no way to say whether it's a short or long shaft, just from the production number.

If the motor was registered for warranty when new, a Merc dealer can try poking in the number for you which would pop up the model, shaft length etc, but unless you have access to Merc's warranty files, us "driveway guys" can't tell what it is...

Sorry, I should have said that too,I was just thinking on the age difference and the number was within the range for a two cyl of that size and vintage
