1981 50HP serial #6011979. Was just wondering if there are different "types" of lower unit oil? If so what do I use.
Thx for the help. At work, no manual, was going to stop on the way home to pick it up.

Re: Type of lower unit oil?

You can use any outboard lower unit oil except "type C" (used only for OMC electric shift gears).

It generally comes as 80, 90 or 80/90 weight . Either dinosaur oil, semi or fully synthetic is fine.

If you can't find "outboard" gear oil you can use any automotive gear oil (in the above weights) as long as it is GL5 rated (will state that on the back label in the part we never read) :)

GL5 is simply a water resistance hypoid gear oil that won't foam up/expand when in contact with water. You may also see "HP" rated oil (such as HP90). That would be fine as well as long as the GL5 is there also. The HP simply stands for "high pressure" and is included in the GL5 rating automatically, but some brands may still label their oil that way...
