i have a 89 evinrude 60 hp vro that goes fine underway and all of a sudden seems like a switch is hit and goes down to half throttle. it is mounted on a pontoon boat that goes 24 mph when runniing good then kicks down to 13 mph and plowing.whats wrong?

Your engine may have the SLOW system that kicks in when the engine overheats. It cuts the RPM down to about 2400 as I recall, so that you don't destroy the powerhead.

how does the motor act when it goes to half power? have you checked the overheat alarm on the motor to see if it works?

You likely have water in the carbs. I had this same problem. Motor runs fine at idle and lower speeds? Water settles in the carb bowl and gets sucked up at higher speeds, then the motor "drowns". Pull the cover, unscrew bleeder screw at the bottom of one carb and pump the priming bulb until gas runs out. Tighten the screw and then do the other 2 carbs. It'll be fine immediately if this is the problem.
