I have an 85hp 1980 evinrude ( 2-stroke), and I am hoping someone could tell me how much propshaft endplay is too much? Also, what is the acceptable range for cylinder compression for this V-4? Thanks a bunch!

Re: prop shaft endplay & cylinder compression

I browsed my service manual and it said that you should have at least 100psi in each cylinder. furthermore, the specific psi per cylinder is not very important. Rather it is important that the psi of all the cylinders be close. here is a snippet from the manual:

"While minimum cylinder compression should not be less than 100psi, the actual readings are not as important as the differences in readings when interpreting the results. A variation of more than 15 psi between 2 cylinders indicates a problem with the lower reading cylinder, such as worn or sticking piston rings and/or scored pistons or cylinders."

I have a V4 140hp and my psi readings are all around 115 - 124.

How much end play do you have? Some end play is normal...maybe up to 3/16 inch.

Thank-you tmonson. You've made my day. I have one cyl. 3lbs under the others which are 120.
