Re: 1965 40 hp

I have a question about my 1965 40 HP Johnson super seahorse electric shift motor. The boat starts fine, but when I am out in the water and I push the throttle to forward there is no problem, but once I plane out usually within a minute or so without touching the throttle the boat goes to half speed. It stalls unless I get into neutral quickly.

I also noticed that when I had the cowling off it seemed to run ok, but once I put the cowling back on it stalled.

Re: 1965 40 hp

If it runs correctly without the cowling it most likely has a blown power head gasket allowing exhaust to escape and not go down the exhaust housing and chocking the engine down.
Try squriting a little 2 cycle oil in the carb with the engine running and see if you can find the exhaust leak.

Re: 1965 40 hp

might also investigate whether the cowling is restricting air intake. I know my cowling has an air intake port. If that were to become obstructed somehow I imagine that would bog the engine down also.
