I'm posting for a friend of mine,so I might not have enough information. She has an early 80's 90 HP evinrude that will only start after choking no matter if it is a cold start or cranking after it has been run pulling a skier. She says it runs and idles fine once you get it started. She has new plugs and carbs are clean . Any ideas what she can check? Thanks

Re: won't start unless you choke

My guess 'she' should check engine temp and thermostats.
Most likely the engine runs cold all the time.
Another option might be that cranking speed is getting low due to worn starter brushes or low start amp from battery to starter.
I would just keep on choking even if 'warm'.

I agree with haffiman, if that is the only problem you have out of a motor, you are blessed. I have been around several motors that require choking everytime you start them. Older motors like this are not uncommon at all. I guess some are just cold collared and need alittle extra fuel to fire up. I wouldn't worry about it. Choke it and enjoy the ride
