Year needed

New to the site. I've been told I have an 89 but the serial plate can not be read. Its a 115 with a long shaft that is newer. Are there any other ways to tell the year?

Mercrury's don't really go by year.They like serial #s.Look on the block for a shiny freeze plug it should have #s stammped on it.Mine is on the right lower down on the block.Your's could be anywhere.J
