Old Motor and New Users1959 35hp

Our 1959 Evinrude Lark 35 hp...33516 was overhauled by the "Boat MD" late last summer. We just put it in the water yesterday (7/15/2010). Oh by the way....it was on dry land in a garage for 30 years before the overhaul. But, the motor and boat are very clean and look good.

After we finally got the motor running, we had these problems:

1.) The motor would not continue to run in low throttle...we were trying to troll
2.) After we stopped for lunch, we had no thrust. We barely moved forward with full throttle and went to the docks....discovered one of our almost new sparkplugs was "fowled" and the other was very dirty. Why?.... we hadn't been running the motor prior to 7/15. We had Champion J4C plugs in the motor......we heard we should have J6C but our local parts store said J6C is being replaced by J4C. Is this the right plug? Did we burn up our plugs trying to get it started?
3.) We have been using a 50:1 oil to gas mixture......is this right? Some of the other boaters at the dock said it should be 30:1 and I read in a blog here that 16:1 was being used.

We are both newbies because the last time we were in this boat we were kids and did not pay attention to the details of actually operating the motor.

Any advise? We want to understand how to properly treat and enjoy this good old antique!!

Can someone help us?....thanks in advance our "Old Hydroswift"

Re: Old Motor and New Users

The manual calls for 24:1 oil/gas mix. The chart I have calls for a J4J which was replaced by the J4C. But if you are mostly trolling you may want to try the J6C or J6J if you can find them. Try readjusting the carb. Lightly seat the upper adjusting needle then back it out 1 1/2 turns. Do the same on the bottom but back it out 3/4 turn. Get the motor running then adjust the upper to obtain the best idle. The lower will be adjusted out on the lake at full throttle. Watch the knobs to see if they are moving while the motor is running. If so take a 7/16th open end wrench and tighten the nut enough so that they don't turn on their own but can be turned to fine tune the motor. Be sure to let the motor idle for a couple minutes before running full throttle. If you don't plan on running the motor for awhile allow it to run out of fuel by removing the hose from the motor. When shifting idle down and quickly engage the gear. Don't try to ease the motor into gear as that is the main cause of damaged gears. Make sure the water pump is working. You should see a good steady stream coming from the big hole at the back. When you went to full throttle did the motor power up but the boat didn't pick up speed or did the motor not speed up? Power up and no boat speed would indicate a spun prop hub.
