Mariner 40 hp year identification

I have a mariner 40ELTO Code 6E9 L Serial#500791 How can I tell what year it is? I have looked on charts and they do not include that serial!
 
Can't give you an exact year - 81/82 would be close, not enough were even produced to make a blip on the production sheets.

That is a fairly rare Yami/Mariner "C" model "40ET" (on the merc parts charts) - very few 40's had the electric trim.

It is mechanically identical to one having a serial number starting with 4 vice your 5 (except for the trim/tilt).
