Need help identifying Mariner year

That is a 1987 production number from the Merc plant in Belgium.

The problem is, Merc/Belgium didn't build the 90 horse model in 1987, which is why you are not going to find it in any of the online parts stores.

Are you positive it's a 90 horse - there was a 75 horse that could have that serial number - and since the 75 and 90's shared about 95% of their parts, someone could have replaced the hood on it somewhere along the line.

It is also possible too, that it simply has a 1987 production number and IS a 1988 Mercury/Mariner.

Check the carbs for a casting number - you are looking for a WME-6 (75 horse) or WME-5 (90 horse).

If you find something different, post it up and we can figure out exactly what you have...

Thanks for the reply. I had a look under the hood earlier what I found said: WME (followed by 'XK' in a circle) with the number 3301-9012 below it. Does this mean anything to you?

That doesn't help - 3301-9012 was the carb body used on the 70, 75, 80 and 90 horse models - really need the WME number to determine horsepower from carbs - so we are out of luck there...
