Merc SN 6415497, what year??

I have a Mercury 40 hp 2-cylinder/2 stroke outboard with serial number 6415407, and electric start and a long shaft. Is this a 1983 EL 40hp?? The first serial number for 1983 is 6228285 but then it goes to Gxxxxxx for 1984.

Your engine is a 1983 MERCURY 40 EL, Model number 1040523.
