air silencer 1957 35hp

I have 1957, 35hp, seahorse that is missing the Air silencer.
1. do I have to have an air silencer?
2. I have the front half the air silencer, does anyone have the back half
3. or does anyon have a complete air silencer, that I can purchase?

Quieter with it on. May cut down on some crud getting sucked into the carb even though it is hollow.
