could be a timing issue as well. sounds like the carb is loading up but the rattling seems like timing too high / low. you will never get the carb adjusted right if the timing isn't right so check the timing and then adjust the carb to get the optimal running out of your boat. Does the boat seem to be weak as well like it takes a lot of gas to get it to plane out?
 
marine fuel pumps have a clear tube that dumps spilled fuel into the carb if the fuel pump diaphragm fails. sounds like that might be happening. look for that tube from the fuel pump to carb - should be dry. if not you need a fuel pump

If the engine is pinging a lot from detonation, you can use higher octane fuel, or add something like 108 Octane Boost to the fuel.

Or you can retard the timing a couple of degrees but you'll lose a few HP doing that.
