Snapped Prop Shaft on OX66 1999 250HP - WHY?

1999 OX66 Yamaha 250HP. I'm pretty sure (but not positive) that I hit something while cruising at 4300rpm (30 knots). Anyhow, I stopped and then tried to go again and thought I had spun the hub. Actually, the prop shaft was snapped-off just inside the seal. Assuming I did hit a log, why would this happen instead of just spinning the hub? Or, could it be a long-term stress fatigue failure? I've never seen this happen to anyone else. The shaft is really beefy, over an inch diameter! Common failure or fluke?

They are meant to snap to protect the rest of the system. But when they do you can usually count on a new lower unit, at least that was my experience. I'm assuming your prop(s) is toast as well?

I had the same thing happen, and the hub did not spin like I thought it would. Snapped the prop shaft instead.

Don't know about the prop. It's at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. Maybe I can blame BP?
