2000 70hp evinrude won't start

Our 2000 70hp 4-stroke started right up after taking it out of winter storage. We drove it for a couple of hours without a hitch. Now it won't start and makes a terrible whirring or whining noise when we try to start it. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the starter is not engaging the flywheel. See if the gear on the starter motor moves freely up & down. If not give the shaft a little lubrication, then try it again.
