1997 9.8 hp Tohatsu Solenoid Problem

I am just starting to use a 1997 9.8 Tohatsu with remote control. Motor was not used by previous owner so like new. The motor frequently stalls out & fails to start. The problem seems to be that the solenoid shaft or "plunger" moves in but does not disengage when the motor heats up; it stays "in" and the solenoid gets very hot. At full throttle the choke does not allow full power. The solenoid appears OK, but is there a sensor elsewhere on the motor that in failing to tell the solenoid when to disengage???

That setup is a "push to choke" type. You push in on the ignition key to activate the choke solenoid. (See the owner's manual). There are no other devices involved in the choke wiring. Sounds like there may be a wiring problem, possibly a short circuit, between the motor and the RC box (or internal to the RC box, maybe even a bad switch). If this continues for long, you may burn out the solenoid. Wiring diagrams and troubleshooting details are in the Factory service manual, available at any Tohatsu/Nissan dealer. They will need your correct model and serial numbers when ordering any parts. Year of manufacture is unimportant.
