You really ought to have a Factory service manual, available from a dealer. Elvin's website has a parts catalog with exploded diagrams at http://www.internetoutboards.com/PartsCatalogMenu.htm

The coil spring goes in first. That's retained by the roll pin in the clutch dog. Then the machined spring pin holder (disc or slug), followed by the push rod. If you attempt to place the disc on the wrong side of the roll pin -- if you can even compress the coil spring that far -- you will know right away. You won't get enough throw from the cam to disengage from forward A gear and into reverse C gear, and the puch rod may bind between the roll pin and the prop shaft.
