Hoping someone can help me out I have a mercury 110 9.8 I believe its a 1976.I was told I have a bad impeller since it doesn't spit water out the side like its suppose to.Can anyone tell me is it hard to remove the lower unit and replace it?

Not really. Drop the LU, remove the two nuts and level the top off the water pump cartridge. Replacing the impeller is a trick, however, so if you want to do it get back to me and I'll walk you through it.

Not too difficult. Get a manual and follow the instructions. Just remember "reassembly is the reverse of dissassembly"!! Pay Attention to how it comes apart!! Make sure you get the impeller drive key inserted correctly and don't play with the gear shift while you have it apart. Could also be a plugged telltale pee hole. Run a wire through the hole. Merc's seem to be bad about sucking up dirt and debris and pluging the telltale pee hole.

I just did one on my 75 9.8. The shaft that runs my impeller was pitted also and water was flowing past my waterpump seal into my bottom end. I heard it was kind of a common problem, and the shaft cost about a million bucks. I took a DA wheel and cleaned up the shaft a little and replaced the water pump seals too. If you plan on doing this also I think I have a better way to clean that shaft without removing it. Let me know.

I looked and on the bottom of the lower unit is a screen it is all plugged up with pieces of rubber where it came from I don't know. Is this screen where my water flow is from?If there is pieces of rubber in there could it get sucked up and mess up anything else in the engine?
