1985 mariner 9.9 hp

i was wondering what could be wrong with my motor because i can troll for hours with no problems its pumping water . As soon as i opened it up it takes no time at all to overheat and the water is very hot that its pumping out.

It is pumping enough water at idle to cool it, but when you open it up there isn't enough. Had this problem on a boat I had. Replace the impeller and you should be good to go. Impellers break down over time and as a rule should be replaced every 2 years if not sooner depending on how many hours you use it. If it sits in the driveway most of the summer, replace it every year, as the sun heating up the lower unit will cause it to break down faster.
