I am in need of some help, I have an 83 merc 115 that is having issues, I think a rectifier just failed for the 2nd time, as the first time it went the tach went as well, now the tach is out again so im putting to two together. I have about 12.5 volts on the battery when the engine is running, I also tested it on a charger and its the same so im thinking the battery is getting a charge? i do not have a way to test any amps getting to it, not sure if this can happen or not. What can i test to see whats causing the rectifiers to fail?

Next, this last weekend the boat fell off of plane at WOT acted as if it was out of fuel, it would not come back on plane and i had difficulty getting it fired on the water, started up like a champ in the driveway as it always does. I checked the fuel filter and gasket everything seemed good?

Where would you guys start? im thinking the electrical issue and dying could be related, I had to throw the wrong parts at it to fix it, but i really dont know where to start to trouble shoot it, i think i have all the tools ill need and i have a manual for the engine so i should be able to take it apart and have instructions to put it back together.

thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Help Needed 83 Merc 115

Should also mention, this motor melted a piston last summer, I found a used powerhead and had it swapped by a mechanic here in town. Im not skilled enough to rebuild, and the used parts were cheap, and got a blessing from the mechanic that did the work, everything was tip top until this last Friday. Last summer i did have the carbs rebuilt and again this most recent guy said they looked fresh so im hoping they are not apart of this new problem, not that i dont trust any of the guys ive paid to work on this, my bargin of a boat has become a bit of a money pit and id like to stop paying everystep of the way if at all possible.

thanks again

troubleshooting can be found here along with all the specs, you will need a meter and the knowledge to use it
http://cdielectronics.com/Support.aspx

If you plug a carb jet you will burn up another powerhead, best be sure they are clean.

you can find many vidios here, start with this one

he also has spark and compression test, this is the first thing to check to see what the damsge is.
