Classic Anniversary 70 Hp ?

I have a 70 hp 4 cylinder mercury with trim and tilt. The serial number is B106999. Is this an unusual number? I cannot locate this on any serial number searches. I think it may be an '87 anniversary edition.

Yes, that serial appears to be "before" the start serials for the 1987 models, but since the 70 horse was re-introduced that year (previously last produced in 1983), it is probably safe to assume it was built in mid/late 86 in anticipation of the 87 model year (and was sold as, and is "mechanically" a 1987 model).

There is more than one instance where a Merc serial (actually a production number) doesn't show up on the lists. There were a whole lots of 1985 models which (should) have had an "all numbers" serial that ended up with the alpha numeric serial that came into use in 1986.

The "phantom numbers" are most often seen if the motor was produced in the year prior to it's "release" as a new or re-introduced model...
