1974 mercury reverse lock

"motor lock not working proper

"motor lock not working properly, do'es not unlock in forward, rod Plastic, seems to be free in reverse but binds in forward gear,cam seems ok, but don't know if there is a spring "missing" or adjustment. Have been running with it "locked" all the time, (look out rocks), thanks for any help."

"noel, I don't know anything about small motors but at a guess your cam is in the wrong way round as it unlocks in reverse and locks in fwd."
 
The locking claws are spring l

The locking claws are spring loaded onto the trim position pin or shaft and the cam will lift the claws off the trim position shaft only in forward gear Most times the problem is the cam and once replaced everything works fine again.

"Thanks jamie, sounds like could be the problem, guess the only way to replace is to remove lower section, and entire shift shaft from bottom, the cam must be "pressed" in place? Thanks again"
