New merc synthetics gear lube

"Hey Cliff, everyone has an opinion, here's mine.

IF you change the gear lube once a year or after every 100 hours (whichever comes first) you don't need anything better than any GL-5 rated dino-gear oil.

If you live in a part of the country that sees drastic temp changes between summer and winter you will never achieve a true water seal on the lower unit (just too much expansion and contraction of the metal over the seasons) so there will always be some water intrusion.

Because of that you can't really leave a sythetic in the case long enough to obtain the benefit it could otherwise provide over a standard gear oil.

I buy a no name gear oil, change it a couple times a season (depending on use) and have never had a problem.

My current motors 2 x 1986, 2 x 1987, and 1 x 1991 have never so much as thrown me a sliver of metal from the gears and all have well over 1000 hours of run time each.

And, one of the 86 models just got it's first lower unit reseal this winter - all the others are still original...."
