"if maintained properly" I have seen 25,000 hr on these engines and yes thats not a typo 25,000. the 5.9 is a great engine used in evreything for marine to industrial to automotive, 2000hrs is nothing i wouldnt even consider it broke in yet. chance are that something will rust out and need to be fix before it wears out and needs to be rebuilt.
 
I have the 330hp 5.9l Ivecos that Cummins and Iveco built in a joint venture as a development of that same 5.9l engine. At 3500hrs now they are still my 'new' engines (I repowered from previous generation Ivecos). Even in my Sportfisher I am expecting to see 8000+ hours. So as above, look after them and they will probably die of old age before you wear them out.
