I just purchased a used merc 9.8 and I'm having a little difficulty figuring out what year it is.

The serial number on the transom sticker says A111338.

Can anyone help?

Normally, the 9.8 which was discontinued after the 1985 model year would have an "all number" serial.

The "A" was a new production serial which Merc started using in 85 in preparation for the all new 1986 models.

So your 9.8 got a serial destined for a 9.9 which replaced your model.

If you are using on-line parts suppliers you can use the serial 6620196 (which will show as valid for an 85 9.8 horse) to find listings particular to your motor..."
