"Picked up a 2000 4 stroke 4 hp motor and its leaking engine oil from behind the prop and I popped the cowling and there is oil all over motor as well. The oil fill cap is tight and I really have not had a chance to look into this but do you guys have any ideas?

"You should hope for a bad bas

"You should hope for a bad base gasket or seal. The other alternative would be a cracked block....

Of course there is always option 3 - somebody layed the motor down on the wrong side and the oil simply leaked out.....

Clean it all up good, change the oil and then give the motor a test run. Store it in the "upright" position and see if the problem goes away.

If it does, chalk it up to improper storage position...."

REMEMBER IF OIL IN CRANKCASE OR LOWR UNIT LOOKS WHITE AND JELLIED, WATER IS MIXING!!! IF OIL LOOKS WELL , LIKE OIL, CLEAR AND BROWN SHOULD BE SAFE !!! BUT CHANGE POWERHEAD OIL 3MONTHS AND LOWER OIL 6MONTHS OIL DOSENT COST MUCH AND SMALL HOME OPERATIONM !!!!!"
