"what is the gap on points for 1955 18 hp, I just got this one gave to me. I havent cranked it yet. but was told it would crank but wouldnt stay running. I am cleaning carb right now. but was wondering how hard it is to put in points. I have put them in evinrude and johnson 15 hp and 30. Is it the same? and I was wondering if these motors are very good?"

"About 0.018 ". It's btter to degree the flywheel, put the mag at full advance, and set the points to break right on the mark. That sometimes requires more or less than the 0.018 " setting. Also, check to see if the spigot (top of crankcase) is worn, making the mag loose. That can affect the gap tremendously.
