"Hello,

how do I remove a frozen starter from a 1968 Johnson 65 hp v4 (vxl 14b)?

I hand turned the flywheel so that the starter engaged and I could not move either the flywheel or starter bendix with the starter rope attached. So, since the motor sat for a few years and a direct 12v connection to the starter didn't do it, I assume it's frozen solid.

Thanks"

I dont understand why you have

I dont understand why you have engaged Bendix with the flywheel.
Turning the flywheel clockwise by hand slightly should disengage them!

The starter motor should turn freely ( But there appears to be some geared drive between the motor itself and the Bendix shaft)

The Bendix gear should freely wind up the shaft(and fall back)

It looks as though you have to remove the Bendix gear first and then the actual motor to remove it from the engine.

Once removed it should be possible to free the motor and the Bendix if either are seized and lubricate as necessary.

"never hit the side of the sta

"never hit the side of the starter,..damage can occur....the above, should remove it."

"Thanks. I just put the Hammer

"Thanks. I just put the Hammer and block away without a single rap.....

I nudged the bendix up the shaft to try and use the the flywheel as leverage to move the starter shaft after I soaked it with oil from above.

Question: when the bendix is in the seated position and there is no power to the starter should the starter shaft spin freely? Mine does not...

Any procedures on how to remove the starter would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks again,
Mike"
