I am trying to check to see if

I am trying to check to see if my starter is working. Connected directly to new battery. Nothing but a few sparks at the starter and a little smoke. Any thoughts?

"If it does not spin when connected diectly to a good battery then it is faulty.

They are however serviceable and most if not all parts are available.

You dont say what model but models from 1968 are included in the parts lists HERE"
 
It's from a 1968 65 hp v4

It's from a 1968 65 hp v4 (vxl 14b). I found rebuilt starters online for $80. Some are as much as $150.

They don't look too difficult to swap out.
