"Hello,

Our 3-year old Toha

"Hello,

Our 3-year old Tohatsu 2-stroke was seized when we tried to start it after an 8-month layup; the starter was locked solidly when we pulled the rope. We had been very careful breaking it in from new, using a 50-1 oil mix in the fuel and laying it up for winter.
We opened the engine and got a socket on the top of the starter, sprayed in 3-in-one oil, and eventually worked the starter loose. The engine starts and runs with good power, but there is now a loud, significant clattering noise, and we are not using it for fear of making a problem worse.

Are there any suggestions as to where we might look for a problem?

Many thanks for your help, and we think this website is outstanding.

Nic"

Water has gotten to the eterna

Water has gotten to the eternal bearings of the engine. It needs to come apart and be rebuilt.

"Hello T. Guru,

Many thanks

"Hello T. Guru,

Many thanks for your reply and advice. It looks like my weekends from now on are taken care of!

One question: by 'external bearings' do you mean the bearings in the bottom of the shaft, around the prop?

Thanks again,

Nic"
