Johnson outboard starter trouble 1968 65 hp

"I have a 1968 Johnson sea horse v4 65hp. The motor has not started in 3-4 years so I am giving it a try.

Installed a new battery and solinoid, cleaned all the contacts but continue to get a single dull click when I turn the key.

I am getting 12v going in to the solinoid, but 6.5 coming out to the starter. I tried going directly to the starter positive terminal with a jumper from the battery. Nothing but a spark at the battery and a little smoke at the starter...

Any thoughts? Much appreciated.

Thanks"

can you rotate the starter mot

can you rotate the starter motor by hand or has it siezed?

You have tried a jump lead from battery to starter motor but have you checked the negative for good connections

Avoid doing things that cause sparks at the battery. You could ignite the mixture of oxygen and hydrogen given off by the battery. You dont want a battery exploding in your face!

Thanks for the battery tip. It

Thanks for the battery tip. It was just a small spars and I backed off immediately knowing there was a problem. I will try turning the starter by hand tomorrow.
