Reconditioning an older Tohats

Reconditioning an older Tohatsu 5hp. Water pump needs replacement but I cannot figure out how to release the gear shift rod from the control lever so I can pull off the gearcase. Where is the pin I must knock out? The drawing in the manual I have is very unclear. Thanks
 
There is a plug about 1/2 way

There is a plug about 1/2 way up where the shaft runs through. Remove the plug and you should see a clamp holding the rods together. Loosen (don't remove) the bolt and slide the lower shaft out.
