"I have a 4-stroke Tohatsu 9.8mfs (a3) that won't
start (bought NEW in 9/2009). I had her sitting
for a while (4 weeks). I used the pull start (3-pulls), and she started up with the choke on. I usually move the tiller to re-start, and close the choke. She has oil, and fuel. When I pull start, it never 'catches'. If I use the electric, I can hear the motor, but it doesn't sound like it's "Turning-Over".

Is the CD unit shot or is there a relay I can
check/replace? It only has about 40 hrs on it.
I'm in a very remote place. Anybody help?"

"Bad Gas!
I switched to the other tank (has stabil in it),
and it started by manual. It looks like the
electric starter is not "engaging", either it
"Popped" out of place or there's a solenoid not
triggering. At least it RUNS!"

"When I remove the cover, from the tiller side, I
see a square yellow plastic thing. I wasn't sure
if it was a fuse or Relay. Is there a "TRICK" to
opening it without breaking it?

I checked the charging voltage, it's 14.4v. I can
hear the starter motor moving--it's just not
turning the engine over. What do you think?

Also, I have a 12-gal tank w/about 1/2 full. It's
clearly got moisture in it. Can I just add "HEET"
or "Iso-Heet" and fill? or just bite the bullet
and drain it?"

"You need to drain the tank. H

"You need to drain the tank. HEET will damage the engine. Just bend the tabs on the fuse holder to release it. There is a spare fuse in the holder. However, if you can hear the starter I'm confused as to the exact nature of the problem. It could be anything from a loose wire to a bent bendix on the starter. You need to get the engine into a dealer for warranty service. Try

"Thanks tohatsu guru.

I'm not sure what a "bendix" is. I found a pic of
manual to electric conversion. I see the starter is pretty simple. I think the teeth of the starter is not making contact with the flywheel. I can hear the electric motor spinning. I'm thinking the silver bracket (far right) w/4-holes may have come loose or broke. On the bottom LEFT,
there's a short 10gauge wire & what looks like an
"in-line" fuse. What is that thing? Could that
be the culprit? The larger black thing to the
right looks like a solenoid.

I did have an email exchange with Olympic Marine,
but got the impression they didn't do warranty work. Actually, they never replied a 2d time.

If I understand things correctly, as long as I
can show the paperwork, I can go to ANY TOHATSU
DEALER for WARRANTY Work?

I'm alot less anxious, now that I know the engine
starts & runs (manually).

"The black thing is the rectif

"The black thing is the rectifier. It changes the battery current produced by the engine from AC to DC. The starter feeds directly from the battery. Your warranty is good at any Nissan or Tohatsu dealer. It doesn't make any difference where you bought it as the warranty is through the factory, not the selling dealer. If you run into a problem with the dealer let me know and I will take care of it for you."
