"A couple of years ago I bought a 225 Johnson for spares. Turns out since it is an 87, it won't interchange with my 1990's. I bought it as a parts motor because the carbs needed cleaning, and it went into either forward or reverse, but not the other. I was studying the powerhead when I noticed that the shaft that goes to the shift rod did not turn at the same time as you advance the shift lever. There was at least a half inch or more of shift lever movement in one direction where the shiftrod did not turn. A further exam revealed that the shift rod is welded to the plate with the interrupt switch. That weld was broken on this engine. I'll bet there isn't anything wrong with the LU. Anyone having strange shift or cable issues may want to watch out for this problem."
