"I'm thinking about picking up a 1989 DT140 with a blown cylinder...a coworker mentioned that some of the older japanese outboards (tohatsu, specifically) were equipped with one piece cylinder arms and a multi-piece crankshaft, requiring a specific jig to swap out the cylinder arm, if necessary...any thoughts?"

i think he meant connecting rods which need to be pressed and unpressed on the crank

look around for a new crank and go from there
