My friend is about to hoist the 3L 140 Merc for my boat to replace frozen block. Does the outdrive-lower unit need to be removed first? He seems to think drive shaft will pull free of the drive? He is a great mechanic but never pulled a boat engine..

Thanks

"Its been a while since i did one of these, but if there is plenty of room in the boat, i seem to remember it can be pulled with the drive on...

I seem to remember leaving the bell houseing, gimble assembly in the boat and marking everything so the motor went back into the exact same position.

But its easy enough to remove the drive so you might as well.

The issue is that the drive shaft alignment to the gimble bearing and engine coupler is critical. If you're not well aligned, you can wear out the bearing in a hurry."
