Help with cooling problem

hello my 1979 johnson model 20

hello my 1979 johnson model 200tl79a outboard has a porthole above starboard side top piston that is shooting out water. port side telltale trickling water with earmuffs on intake. starboard side telltale working normal. what is this hole for and remmidies would help. thanks for anyones help and time.

"The telltale is most likely clogged. Clean it out with a piece of single strand wire.

That top plate that is attached with 4 bolts is what I think you;re speaking of. There's a rubber diaphram within it which is part of the water bypass valve setup. There's also the thermostat in that area but the leakage is due to the diaphram not sealing.

Purchase a new diaphram if needed, then when installing it, apply a bit of sealer on the outer edges of it. Boat Armor Sealler 1000 is what I use."
 
I think you are talking about

I think you are talking about the vent for the diaphragm that operates the poppit valve. Remove the cover and make the repairs ( ruptured or leaking diaphragm )and do the other side as well. Simple to do.
