I'm a Volvo guy and not too familiar with the Mercs.

What would the gear ratio be on an Alpha drive mated to a 305 Chevy? Early 1990's vintage off a 23' boat.

Thanks for the help!

That was laye 90's to earl

That was laye 90's to early 2000's I believe

If his is 1996 or older it is 1.50:1 I am sure of that. When the change occurred I forgot but it was mensioned in another post

"Ayuh,... You've got to consider Hull Size with the 305,...
Or with any motor I guess...

As a general rule of thumb,..
V8s run 1.50:1s,...
V6s run the 1.65:1s,...
The I6s,+ the old big 4s run the 1.84:1s,+ of course the I4 GM motors run the 1.98:1s..."

"Kghost Ah thanks for setting me straight. I know I read that ratio of 1.62:1 but it never said what years or if Gen I or Gen II. Just mated to a 305 ci motor. I assumed it was an older version because they had less power back then and have gained power over the years and would need less reduction.

Bondo I think the v-6s used the 1.84:1 and the I-6s used the 1.65:1. I know because I just bought an Alpha 1 upper from a 4.3L that is 1.84:1. And it's original to the boat in 1991, also it's a Gen 1 as well."

Ayuh,... I believe that's covered by my statement that,...
"You've got to consider Hull Size"
A 17'er with a 4.3l would run the 1.65,...
A 25'er would need the 1.84...."
