"I purchased a boat with this motor and the motor is throwing off a lot of smoke (very bad when you are downwind), but has good oil pressure and starts and runs well and doesn't consume much oil (suprizing). I suspect worn rings or a cracked ring.
Is there are a way to inspect the rings without dismantling the motor?

"You may be right about the rings, but I have a feeling they are okay. I would look for a rich mixture problem, or worn valve stem seals.

You could replace the rings without any special tools; but lots of patience. Valve stem seals would require a valve spring compressor of some type."

If the motor burns oil and smokes when first started or left not running for some time it would be valve stem seals.

If the problem is smoke when under way i would suspect a ring problem.

Yes a weekend mech could strip and rebuild with a gen manual
