"Hi Folks,
I have a 1958 185HP Interceptor with the Dearbomatic trans (lucky me), 10 deg angle drive, that uses the two stage oil pump for shifting. My question relates to trans oil pressure. I currently have the following oil line routing; pump to top of filter cannister, bottom of filter cannister to oil cooler, then oil cooler to trans. In the past it would rarely belch a load of oil out of the top of the cannister regardless of how tight the top of the cannister was secured. Lately it got so that it burps out oil quite often and makes a real mess.

1. Does it make a difference what direction the oil goes through the filter?

2. Is there a pressure relief valve somewhere in the system/transmission?

3. I was thinking of installing an inline direct reading oil pressure gauge. Any idea of the expected pressure?

4. I have made a new gasket for the oil filter cannister lid but the old one did not look too bad. I have not tried it since.

The transmission shifts okay although in can get unreliable after a long fast run, probably due to the hot thin oil.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
