I currently have a Mercruiser

I currently have a Mercruiser 470 engine and outdrive. I am thinking replacing the engine (been a bit troublesom) with a Ford FSD425 Diesel engine. The standard engine only developes 80HP. My old Merc 470 developes a quoted 170HP that I hear is questionable??.
My question is what would happen if I fitted the diesel 80HP to my current outdrive? would it still have enough torque to get up to 3000/3500rpm which is what I need???. I dont really want to go down the lines of Turbo ford engines due to costs??
Please help.

"First check the condition of the floor, stringers and transom; might have some rot. For me, the cost of rebuilding the 470 along w/other new parts would be cheaper than replacing it w/a comparable HP deisel.

You could drop in a 225 HP 4.3L V-6 for about $4,500."
