I have a aq120b volvo penta ju

I have a aq120b volvo penta just put a new coil on it. And now when I try to start it the ground on the battery gets hot there are three wires going to the coil a light purple I have going from the + side of the coil to the distriber and a white or light tan no sure of the color going to the + side also and a purple going to the - side of the coil dose that sound right and if so then it sound as if I may have a short some were dose that sound right to you Thanks can us all the help you can give me
